Music

Choose a subject

At George Green’s School, the music department is dedicated to fostering a vibrant and inclusive community where music is at the heart of every pupil’s educational experience.

Our vision encompasses three essential strands:

Music is at the Heart of the School Community

We believe that music has the power to unite, inspire, and transform. Through engaging with music and musical experiences, we aim to cultivate a deep love and appreciation for music within our students that will go beyond their time at George Green’s School.

Every child has regular music lessons throughout Year 7, 8, and 9, and completes a thorough, practically focused curriculum. For students wishing to pursue music at KS4 and KS5, we can offer both GCSE and A-Level music.

We strive to create opportunities for every pupil to connect with music in meaningful ways, whether that be performing in one of our range of rock and pop ensembles, or perhaps our choir, Steel Pan Band, String Quartet, Wind Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, or even having access to industry standard equipment in the ‘This Is George Green’s School Music Studio’ students feel a sense of belonging and enhance their well-being through music making, which is shared and celebrated amongst the entire school community.

Exposure to a Rich Musical Diet At George Green’s School

We are proud to teach a curriculum which is not only reflective of and relevant to every student in our school community, but also one which exposes students to a wide variety of musical genres, styles, and traditions.

Students learn the power and importance of music in society, and we celebrate diversity through musical expression, encouraging our students to formulate opinions and discuss the music they discover.

Every year, students attend a wide variety of trips and workshops. This year students have seen the West End production of the musical Hamilton, watched classical music performed in the Old Royal Naval College Chapel, taken part in a series of vocal workshops led by London Youth Choirs, been visited by a professional jazz big band from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and much more.

Learning Musical Skills for Life

Our curriculum is designed so that every pupil has the experience of singing in a group, practising and learning a musical instrument and performing on a stage, equipping them with musical skills and knowledge that will last beyond their years at George Green’s School.

We believe every child should be able to learn a musical instrument and have one-to-one peripatetic music lessons regardless of their personal circumstances. We are proud to offer every George Green’s student free instrumental lessons in addition to our rich extracurricular provision and thorough classroom curriculum. Our goal is not only to teach students how to play an instrument, but give them the confidence, resilience, and lifelong passion for learning and loving music.

Curriculum Map

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high- quality music education should engage and inspire students to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As students progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.

Aims

The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all students:

• perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians

• learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence

• understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
