Learning Beyond the Classroom

Personal Development Activities and Clubs

At George Green’s, we enhance students’ social and cultural skills, by supporting their personal development throughout their school time. We understand the importance of personal development in addition to academic growth.

Our enriching programmes are designed to foster your child's talents and interests. Our eco committee, in particular, encourages students to engage with environmental issues, promoting responsible citizenship and a heightened sense of global awareness. This, along with our other enrichment opportunities, ensures your child receives a well-rounded education.

We do this by offering a broad range of extra-curricular activities like drama, music, sports and other clubs, in partnership with external organisations and by involving GGS students in our exciting  Careers Programme, aiming to raise our students’ aspirations, supporting them in whatever future they decide to pursue!

Our central location enables us to have excellent partnerships with global institutions like Barclays, JP Morgan, Clifford Chance, Canary Wharf Group, Morgan Stanley and many more. Students have the chance to participate in business mentoring workshops, aspirational careers talks, Oxbridge university visits, work experience, 1-1 careers guidance and mock Interviews and CV support.

Our school engages with a wide range of London-wide partner organisations to enable our students to gain valuable social and cultural capital. A few examples include  the Natural History Museum, Thames21, the V&A, English National Ballet, and of course the Duke of Edinburgh Award. We have also forged excellent links with local youth and community projects such as the Canaan Girls project, Spotlight and Young Tower Hamlets. Our historic connections to all things maritime, has enabled students to take part in water-based  residential  trips to UKSA on the Isle of Wight, as well as exciting voyages with Tall Ships Youth Trust and Ocean Youth Trust.

At George Green's School, we believe that education extends beyond the classroom.

Enrichment Wednesday is designed to provide our Year 7 and Year 8 students with unique opportunities to explore their interests and develop new skills. It allows students to engage in a variety of activities that foster creativity, critical thinking and collaboration, helping them also to integrate with students in their year group.

Parents and Carers play a vital role in the success of Enrichment Wednesday. We encourage you to discuss the various activities with your children and support them in choosing experiences that excite them. Whether it is sports, arts, or academic clubs, there is something for everyone to enjoy and benefit from.

Welcome to the page dedicated to the environmental activities we run at George Green’s.

Our Enrichment team working with student volunteers are responsible for various green activities at George Green's School. These include taking part in recycling competitions with local company Cory Energy, river plastic monitoring and litter picking  with Thames 21, and learning about urban nature and biodiversity with the Natural History Museum, as well as a range of other environmental activities. We believe that by taking action at school level, we can make a significant impact on the broader environment and work towards encouraging young people to learn about tackling the Climate Crisis. We encourage all students to participate in our activities and contribute to our green initiatives. We also link with curriculum areas such as science and food tech.

We have a group of committed student volunteers the 'Eco Committee' and staff who regularly volunteer in our lovely outdoor space, the Grow Wild Garden .We have bee hives, two ponds, teeming with amphibians, a polytunnel and a food growing area.  We are passionate about making our school and community more environmentally friendly and encouraging biodiversity, as well as fostering a love of nature and the natural world.

Thanks to a generous grant from Keolis Amey Docklands Community Grant fund, we were also able to build a fantastic Eco Cabin in our school garden. Eco Committee students  came up with the idea for the  wooden cabin where they could spend time learning about volunteering, nature, food-growing and biodiversity.

We want the Eco Cabin and our Grow Wild gardening project to be a beacon for developing awareness of a range of environmental issues for young people and the local community. We hope that the Eco Cabin will also be a base to continue supporting students’ wellbeing and mental health as they enjoy times outdoors in nature, away from screens and phones. We hope our garden space is a positive educational place, where young people volunteer and learn practical skills, such as beekeeping and gardening. We want it to be a peaceful place for members of our school community of students and staff to enjoy time learning or relaxing in nature.

Canary Wharf Community Grant funding has also generously provided ongoing funding support for this project.  Students wanted to take part in more outdoor environmental activities and identified developing the garden as a key area for action connected to making a difference to the school and the environment, both locally and globally.

The garden is very important because it has so much biodiversity.  It is also fun! We learn so much about different plant and insect species.
