Home Learning
We recognise the fundamental importance of home learning at George Green’s School and we believe it is a key part of building independent learning skills, encouraging student organisation and providing parents with an opportunity to engage with our curriculum.
Evidence from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) demonstrates that effective home learning can lead to an additional 5 months progress across pupil’s time at secondary school.
Our Key Principles
- Home learning will be set regularly with the following guidelines for the quantity of work set for each subject:
- Key Stage 3 = 30 minutes per fortnight
- Key Stage 4 = 1 hour per fortnight
- Key Stage 5 = 10 hours per fortnight
- All home learning must have a clear purpose and the aim should be shared with students. Home learning may include preparing for new learning, embedding prior learning, or applying learning.
- Home learning will be set on a specific day for each subject in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. Please see the home learning timetables below for each year group. At Key Stage 5, the students will be set home learning after every lesson.
Monitoring Home Learning
- Students will record their home learning in their student planners. Parents/Carers should check this when signing planners each week.
- Home learning will also be set as an assignment on MS Teams. Pupils can track this via their outlook email and calendar and parents can track assignments via emails that are sent out from MS Teams.
- When home learning is due, teachers will check the work pupils have submitted and will award achievement points for ‘Exceptional Home Learning’ where appropriate.
- Where home learning is incomplete, or not done to the required standard, teachers will follow up with a sanction. If there are consecutive instances of non-completion of home learning, pupils will be sanctioned with a centralised detention (CDS) on the following day.
Please take a moment to review the home learning timetables for each year group.
