Policies and Behaviour Expectations
Routines and Expectations
Please take the time to review our school policies with your child. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Code of Conduct for Members of Staff
You can find the full list of our school policies here.
Attendance
Research shows that there is a direct link between exceptional attendance and outstanding academic progress and achievement. We also know that those students who attend regularly also tend
to have the strongest and most secure friendship groups.
• We expect students to achieve at least 97% attendance.
• Doctor and Dentist appointments are to be arranged out of school time. Proof of Hospital or Orthodontist appointments to be brought into school and shown to tutors/attendance team.
• If your child is absent please ring our absence line on 0207 987 6032.
• If your child is ill for more than 3 consecutive days, or 5 days within a half term we need to see a Doctor’s note.
Borough and School Policy clearly say that we should not authorise any holidays during term time. Such absences will remain unauthorised and parent/carers risk paying a fine if they do choose to take their child away at any time other than during school holidays.
Punctuality
Students are to arrive in plenty of time for registration and lessons. Punctuality to school and to lessons is closely monitored and students who repeatedly arrive late, often disturbing the learning
of others, will face clear consequences.
How we manage lateness
• The school day starts at 8.45am and your child will receive a late mark if they are not in by that time. Students should aim to arrive in school by 8.35am at the latest.
• A 40 minute (CDS) detention will be issued on the same day if your child arrives after 8:45am. A detention until 5pm will be issued for every 5 occasions your child arrives late.
• If your child is regularly late you may be asked to attend a meeting with a member of the attendance team and the Deputy Headteacher.
• 15 lates, or an attendance level of below 90%, in a half term, may result in a Penalty Notice.
• Please do contact us at any time if you are having problems getting your child to school on time on 0207 987 6032.
At GGS we recognise that personal communication through mobile technologies has become part of
our everyday lives. We know that 90% of teenagers in the UK own a mobile device and as such we need
to ensure that our students learn how to use mobile devices safely and are taught good mobile manners.
We know that our parent/carers want to be able to contact their children on the way to and from school
and that providing a child with a mobile device can give parent/carers reassurance that they can contact
their child if they need to speak with them urgently. We also recognise through student voice that our
students very much want to keep their mobile devices on them and through research that mobile devices
can be used in classrooms for positive educational purposes.
That said, research through the London School of Economics also shows that allowing access to
devices in schools can negatively impact on student performance. We also know that devices can be a
distraction and if used inappropriately can cause significant harm, for example through cyber bullying.
To support our students and their parent/carers, we have developed a clear Responsible Use Policy for
mobile devices. All relevant stakeholders are to read and understand this as a condition upon which
permission is given to bring mobile devices to school.
