As part of a hugely diverse community, we must be willing to connect by making comparisons, shifting our point of view and appreciating the differences that make each culture unique. The experience of learning foreign languages is powerful because it opens your mind, and it educates you about the beauty of traditions, exotic flavours and colourful accents.

  • Aspiration | According to the Financial Times, knowing more than one language is the most desirable skill for a stock market employee. This is because it takes confidence and courage to speak another language, the same courage and confidence needed in the stock market. In Modern Foreign Languages, by studying French or Spanish, your child will learn how to make connections in a globalised dimension. Communication and interaction, speaking and risk-taking are the very aspects at the heart of language learning. Your child will learn how to communicate in a foreign language while also mastering the arts of grammar and pronunciation.
  • Equality | Language learning leans on three key pillars: phonics (sounds), vocabulary (words), and grammar (how we put words together in a meaningful way). The way we teach languages at George Green’s School is very inclusive and it developed around careful and measured modelling, consistent practice, engaging low stakes tests like quizzes and games, and feedback to help your child learn from mistakes and move forward. This is complemented by weekly homework practice to make sure that all the newly acquired knowledge stays in the working memory.
  • Excellence | The Modern Foreign Languages curriculum is developed around four main skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The latter will be applied to themes based on culture, society, art, music, sport, global issues, life values, and ambitions for the future. Your child will learn though role plays, reading out loud, dictations, writing letters, and by identifying key messages in a text or in a listening activity.  

At George Green’s School we teach Spanish and French from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 5. However, we also facilitate GCSE and A Level exams in other languages if the students wish to gain an additional qualification.

According to london.gov.uk, in London more than 300 languages are spoken. This is a striking indication of how multilingual and multicultural our city is. As a matter of fact, UNICEF confirm that learning a language different to our birth one plays a huge role in peace keeping and making the world a better place.

Given their incredible social and financial value, Modern Foreign Languages are highly sought after by employers and universities, and having a language at GCSE helps students achieve an Ebacc (English Baccalaureate).

Curriculum Map

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

Aims

The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

• understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources

• speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation

• can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt

• discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
