Economics
Studying GCSE Economics will provide you with valuable skills that can help you succeed in other subjects at Sixth Form if you choose to explore them. A qualification in Economics opens up a wide range of career pathways, including opportunities in finance, accounting, the legal sector, the public sector, government, investment banking, research, statistics, start-up businesses, business strategy, and education. At GGS Sixth Form, you can choose to study a BTEC Level 3 in Business, A-Level Economics, and A-Level Government & Politics.

What you will study
Students will get an excellent understanding of how societies allocate their scarce resources to meet the needs and wants of their people. They will develop a greater understanding of the economic problems which face individuals, firms and governments on a local, national and global level. By the end of their learning journey, they will understand the skills, models and theories needed to solve these problems.
Economics is divided into Micro and Macro Economics. Students will study Micro first and then Macro. The rationale being that ‘Micro’
teaches the core basics and localised economics and Macro covers Economics on a more national and international scale. Understanding of Macro is dependent on a strong grasps of Micro.
Assessment
The course is assessed through two exams Component 1 is worth 50% and Component 2 is worth 50%.
Each exam is 1 hour 30 minutes each and consists of calculations, diagrams, multiple choice, short answer and essay questions.
Both exams will take place at the end of Year 11. Please note there is no coursework in GCSE Economics.

What you will Study
Students will answer the basic economic problem of how to allocate scarce resources when we have unlimited wants. Studying Economics will help students gain a deeper insight into how markets work and how they fail and evaluate how
decisions are made by individuals, businesses and the government. They will develop transferable skills such as problem solving, communication, analysis, numeracy, decision making and commercial awareness. Economics is particularly useful for students who want to work in sectors such as accountancy, finance, banking, journalism or the government.

In Economics, students will:
- Analyse and evaluate economic theories, concepts and real-life events to formulate
- arguments and make substantiated judgements.
- Develop an interest in, and enthusiasm for economics including real-world issues
- such as income inequality, trade, environmental sustainability, tax, government
- spending, unemployment and pricing strategies.
- Use enquiring, critical and thoughtful approach to the study of economics and
- develop an ability to think as an economist.
- Understand that economic behaviour can be studied from a range of perspectives.
