National Careers Week

National Careers Week at George Green's School in March was filled with some fantastic events and trips.

All students had an employer assembly with an industry expert. We also had some career workshops delivered by Mace construction company and some Engineering workshops with renowned firm Atkins Realis with our science students and A-Level Physics students. We even had someone from the BBC speak to our English classes about his role at this huge organisation linking this back to this core subject.

Our Year 12 students visited international law firm CMS for a careers and networking event and teachers at the school engaged with a careers bingo quiz! It was a filled week with some great experiences for NCW.

A huge thank you to all participating companies on National Careers Week.

Barclays- Year 8              Dragons Den and                Year 12 Networking

We have organised many events with Barclays this academic year.

On March 12th we had 26 volunteers from the corporate bank visit George Green's School to deliver a team building and dragons den presentation day with our Year 8 students. All students worked with the volunteers to create a solution to help the community and then presented this to judges. Our winning team created an AI Robot to help vulnerable individuals including the elderly and disabled with their medical needs at home.

We also had a networking event with our Sixth Form where they touched on careers and mock Interviews.

We were also really fortunate to take a group of our L3 Business students down to visit the bank in Canary Wharf earlier this academic year.

Year 9 students JP Morgan STEM Challenge

16 Year 9 students have completed a 5 month STEM programme with JP Morgan and Hark where they created a sustainable solution to air quality and food waste.

Once students had an idea, they brought this to life by visiting a professional design studio where they built their product prototype and presentation boards. There were 24 school teams across London who took part, our students did a fantastic job and they made George Green's proud!

See what our Year 9 students created below:

Year 12 Students' Work Experience Week

During February's half term we had 46 Year 12 students that did work experience giving up their holiday to gain an insight into the world of work. This ranged from accounting firms to editing studios and even an NHS Hospital.

Read some of our student experiences below:

Whipps Cross Hospital- Hasna- Year 12
I completed a one week placement in a hospital through school where I shadowed doctors and medical professionals. I did ward rounds, visited clinics, emergency clinics, A&E and even saw a doctor treat a persons broken nose! I want to pursue Medicine in the future and this really gave me an insight into the fast-paced NHS clinical enviroment.

Stiff+Trevillion Architects- Jumana
I completed this placement as I am interested in Engineering and Architecture,  really enjoyed my placement and worked on a pavilion project and presented my work on the last day to employers. My favourite part was getting a tour of the office and different workshops that was organised for me.

Trim Editing Studio- Mahmudur
I completed my placement at Trim Editing studio who work with high end TV commercials, music videos and fashion and Drama.  I learnt more about the industry I was working in which is post- production.

Mayer Brown Law Firm placements for our Year 12s

9 of our Year 12 students were given access  to exclusive placements at Mayer Brown Law firm in Liverpool street.
Our students were spread across Litigation (court),  Corporate, Employment, Finance, Intellectual Property, Real Estate and Restructuring. All students completed a range of activities including a mock trial case as well as a visit to the Royal Courts of Justice with the Lawyers.
Read our below about their experiences:

Ridwan- Year 12
I completed a one week placement at Mayer Brown in Litigation. We went the Royal Courts of Justice; the new one and the Victorian one. Our guide, Clark, took us inside two courtrooms where we were able to sit down and watch an actual court case take place. We then went to the Law Society and saw a lot of cool artifacts. We had a mock court trial case where I was a claimant and we were against the defendants about a certain case that actually happened in real life. It gave me an insight of how cases are carried out in actual courts and made me understand how much research and information you need beforehand before presenting in court.

Isha- Year 12
My experience at Mayer Brown consisted of a Speaker panel with Trainee Solicitors and Legal Apprentices, Networking lunch with panel speakers, Mock Court Trial, Pathways and process to becoming a lawyer, Tour of the Law Courts, Shadowing a litigation associate, Online IT training, Building on your Networking Skills. My highlight was definitely the mock Court Trial!
